The Criminal Internet

// The Criminal Internet

Fifteen years of crypto-currency tracing, dark net investigations and cyber-crime raids with the police: how scam and crime groups really work, how criminals create social trust, how they recruit and cooperate — and how criminal groups are leveraging new technology, including an emerging wave of criminal scams bolstered by AI-generated manipulation, crypto-currencies and state-sponsored support. Kill List

The Kill List team on stage winning at the British Podcast Awards, with Carl Miller holding the trophies

A four-year secret investigation into a sophisticated network of organised criminal sites on the dark net — sites offering murder for hire, and holding a list of real people whose deaths had been ordered and paid for. Working with hackers who breached the network and alongside law enforcement, the team traced the people on the list and the people who put them there, leading to global cooperation with the FBI. It resulted in 34 arrests, 28 convictions and over 180 years of prison time being sentenced.

The investigation became Kill List, the podcast Carl hosts: an 18-part series that reached #1 in seven countries. Carl's TED talk about the investigation, Inside a dark web kill list, has been played more than 1.2 million times — and his DEF CON 33 talk, Kill List: Hacking an Assassination Site on the Dark Web, has passed a million views.
