Who is Carl Miller?
Carl Miller is a British writer, investigator and speaker on power in the digital age. He founded the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media (CASM) at the think tank Demos and the information-integrity lab CASM Technology, hosts the investigative podcast Kill List, and wrote The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab. His work spans disinformation, information warfare, the dark net and the manipulation of AI systems.

What is Kill List?
Kill List is an 18-part investigative podcast, hosted by Carl Miller, built from a four-year secret investigation into a dark-web murder-for-hire network. Working with hackers and law enforcement, the investigation led to global cooperation with the FBI, 34 arrests, 28 convictions and over 180 years of prison sentences. What is SOCMINT?
SOCMINT — social media intelligence — is the use of social media data for intelligence and investigation. Carl Miller co-coined the term with Sir David Omand and Jamie Bartlett in the 2012 Demos paper #Intelligence, and it is now a standard part of criminal and security investigation.

GEO for Geopolitics is a 2026 Demos report by Carl Miller, Hannah Perry and Flynn Devine on the manipulation of AI itself. It found a sanctioned Russian influence operation surfacing favourably across five frontier AI models, and maps how information warfare is turning on the AI systems people now ask for answers.

What is RAG poisoning, or AI manipulation?
AI manipulation is the deliberate shaping of what large language models retrieve, believe and repeat. Rather than using AI to make propaganda, adversaries treat AI as the target: they manipulate the open-web sources that models retrieve — RAG poisoning — so the models reproduce an attacker's narrative as if it were legitimate. D-RAIL — Directing Responses Against Illicit Influence Operations — is a strategic framework by Carl Miller for countering information warfare by disrupting the operations behind it rather than chasing their content. It targets the infrastructure, funding and personnel of illicit influence operations, minimising collateral impact on legitimate speech.

What is The Death of the Gods?
The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab (William Heinemann, 2018) is Carl Miller's debut book and joint winner of the 2019 Transmission Prize. It traces how new, digital forms of power have chipped away at the old, familiar places where power used to sit.

What is Waves?
Waves is a digital democratic process co-directed by Carl Miller, built by a consortium of Demos and Camden and South Staffordshire Councils to include thousands of people in government policy decisions. It launched in Camden to help shape adult social care policy, recruiting through libraries and bus shelters as well as online. More on digital democracy.

Where does Carl Miller work, and what are his affiliations?
Carl Miller founded the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at Demos and the lab CASM Technology, and is Chief Strategy Officer at the DISARM Foundation. He is a Visiting Fellow at the Department of War Studies, King's College London, a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and a Senior Research Fellow at RAND Europe, and a member of RUSI's States Threats Task Force, the Chatham House High Level Taskforce on AI and Society, and the Expert Group of the European Digital Media Observatory.
